Thesis title: L’area del c.d. Mausoleo di Romolo lungo la via Appia antica. Studio topografico e analitico delle strutture archeologiche

The present dissertation focuses on the topographical and analytical study of the so-called Mausoleum of Romulus and its adjoining quadriporticus, structures that constitute one of the three main architectural hubs of the Maxentian complex at the third mile of the ancient Appian way in Rome. Through direct survey, integrated with terrestrial and drone-based photogrammetry, geophysical investigations (GPR), bibliographic research, and archival analysis, a three-dimensional reconstruction of the entire complex has been developed. Particular attention has been devoted to the analysis of the masonry and to the correlation between the surviving remains and the preexisting structures. The study puts forward a new reconstruction hypothesis of the architectural design underlying the portico and the mausoleum, also based on typological comparisons with Late Antique buildings, thereby contributing to the debate on whether the complex was completed or left unfinished. Ultimately, the research provides an updated tool for the documentation and interpretation of one of the most significant suburban complexes in the Roman area.
