Short description

Nowadays, and since 2010, I am Full Professor of Italian Linguistics (full time) at the DISTU Department (Studi linguistico-letterari, storico-filosofici e giuridici) of Viterbo (Tuscia) University, where I hold annual and biannual courses in both undergraduate and master Degrees, teaching Contemporary Italian Language, History of Italian Language, Italian as Language for Special Purposes. Besides, I supervise both undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations.
As a member of the PhD commission in Historical Linguistics and Italian Linguistics at Sapienza University of Rome, I also supervise and assist PhD dissertations and essays concerning the History of Italian Language (from 13th to 20th century), Italian Linguistics (features and teaching of contemporary Italian), Italian Lexicography and Terminology.
As a Chair of the course in Modern Languages and Cultures, I have gained a solid experience in the didactic organisation of courses about contemporary foreign languages; I have organised and directed university writing courses and refresher courses in Italian didactics for high school teachers. I also collaborate with my colleagues of Italian Literature, Comparative Literature and General Linguistics on the organisation of training apprenticeship courses for high school teachers. From 2014, I direct the Italian Language and Literature section of the initiative "l’Accademia dei Lincei for a new teaching in the school" (Polo di Viterbo), organised by the Accademia dei Lincei.
Between 2000 and 2017, I obtained 6 research funding in Projects of Major National Interest (PRIN); in 4 of these projects, I was in charge for the Tuscia University research working group and I managed to fund over € 160,000. I coordinated Erasmus and Erasmus Plus agreements with the University "Pompeu Fabra" in Barcelona and with the University of Murcia (Department of Translation). In July 2018 I was awarded from DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst) a two-month scholarship for a research on the Italian and German political communication of the last 15 years; I did this research in September and October 2018 at the University of Augsburg.
My professional and scientific activity has always been addressed to the study of Italian (language, culture, literature). I have over 120 scientific publications, including 13 monographs (alone or with other scholars), more than 50 articles in scientific journals (14 of them with referee’s reports), conference proceedings and miscellaneous works, and 8 volumes (proceedings, transactions or miscellaneous) published as editor or co-editor.
I am currently dealing with the following topics: history of the Italian literary and non-literary language (Humanism and Renaissance, modern age, 19th - 20th century); practice and theories of letter writing in Italy from the 16th to the varieties of contemporary Italian language (law, politics, mass media); Italian language of cinema and television (spoken Italian, dubbing, dissemination); didactic of Italian as foreign and additional language / didactic to immigrants; Italian lexicography and terminology.

Teaching experience

I started my university career as a researcher at the University of Lecce in the academic year 1995/96 for five years, until the academic year 1999/2000, where I collaborated with R. Coluccia, ordinary professor of History of the Italian language. For students of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy (four-year course, no distinction between 1st and 2nd levels) I held annual Italian historical grammar courses, collaborated on exams, held student tutorials and acted as supervisor and co-examiner for numerous degree theses. I guaranteed my continual support and attendance every week, up to the academic year 1999/2000.
Since the academic year 2003/2004 I have been teaching at the University of Tuscia. I taught Italian for the Media and Writing Techniques for the Media in Communication Sciences courses (Faculty of Political Science, then Department of Communication Sciences). Since the academic year 2010/11, as an ordinary professor of Italian Linguistics, I have taught contemporary Italian and then Linguistics in the Italian Language Course in Modern Languages and Cultures (DISTU Department).
I have taught Italian language, literature and linguistics at school and university from September 1993 to the present. From 1995/1996 to the present, for over twenty years, I have taught university students for four-year courses, then (from 1999/2000) three-year and specialist courses and writing classes – at various levels - for the University. At the request of the University of Lecce and the University of Tuscia, I also taught in training and professional development courses for high school teachers. Since 2014 I have been working regularly with the ‘Accademia della Crusca’ and with the ‘Accademia dei Lincei’ in training and professional development for high school teachers. Finally, I collaborate with the University of Florence and the Law School in specialisation courses in writing and legal language.
I also have long experience in training courses for high school teachers and also, in the teaching of specialist writing, in courses aimed at jurists (internships, acting magistrates, lawyers). In this work, I have come to realise the great importance of dialogue between teacher/university researcher and school teacher/professional in the evaluation and elaboration of teaching materials and tools. A syllabus of essential skills for Italian language teachers in high school is a useful tool for developing new teaching strategies. Whereas in the professional ambit, collections of texts commented on from a linguistic point of view are extremely useful; these could include suggestions for rewriting and simplification exercises, and correction of real texts, chosen from different textual genres (laws and regulations, judgments, procedural acts, etc.).

Experience as supervisor (2004-2017)

I have been supervisor and co-examiner or examiner of more than 50 four-year theses (no distinction between 1st and 2nd levels); supervisor and examiner of over 150 1st level degree theses; supervisor and examiner or co-examiner of over 20 2nd level theses. I have been the main tutor or co-tutor of 11 doctoral theses (PhD in Italian linguistics, Sapienza University Rome). I have then been supervisor and examiner of 4 final theses of PAS Traineeships (preparatory courses for the National Examination Competition for future teachers) – For both in-university preparatory courses & ‘Active’ on-site traineeships in schools.

Administrative experience (2014-2017)

From June 2014 to October 2017 I have been responsible for (Chair) of the three-year course in Modern Languages and Cultures (see: http://www.unitus.it/it/dipartimento/distu/corsi-di-laurea-triennale1/articolo/presentazione-del-corso-l11).
As Chair, one of my roles is to initiate and control the planning and organising of the courses’ didactic activities. In addition, I am responsible for the management of three three-year educational curricula (Languages and Literature, Languages for Organisations and Touristic Services, Languages for Institutions, Business and Commerce) and nearly 100 different courses distributed over the three-year period. An essential part of the course management includes the continuous monitoring of evaluations provided by national audit bodies (CUN – Consiglio Universitario Nazionale / National University Council, ANVUR – Agenzia Nazionale per la Valutazione del Sistema Universitario e della Ricerca / National Agency for Evaluation of the University and Research System), internal (Comitato di Valutazione della Didattica / Teaching Evaluation Centre, Presidio di Qualità / Quality Control Department, Commissione Paritetica Studenti/Docenti / Student/Teacher Joint Committee), and external (local and national stakeholders) bodies, and periodic evaluations carried out by students.
During my academic career, I have had several positions that also required administrative tasks, regarding the management of funding, scholarships and research grants, and selection of personnel for the organization of courses. I have not had specific training in these activities, but I gained experience and expertise by working with those responsible for national and international research groups and with the administration office staff of the faculty and university departments in which I have worked.
The most relevant administrative experiences relate to my participation, as the principal local manager, in four PRIN research projects (Projects of National Interest).
I have participated in the planning and organization of 12 national and international scientific conferences and seminars, as a direct organizer, alone or with other colleagues, and as a collaborator.
