More information

Courses for the PhD programme are divided in advanced (referred to as corso base) and specialized (corso specialistico)
the Demography curriculum participates in the programme of the European Doctoral School of Demography and, therefore, offers a spcific set of courses (labeled D-EDSD in the Table) that are held in the University hosting the programme for the year.

Method of choosing the subject of the thesis

During their first year, the students attend some specialized courses that help them approach the world of scientific research, and they start working on a potential thesis topic in agreement with their supervisor, usually chosen within board by the end of the first year

Admission to the second year

Final assessment for compulsory courses
Assessment on the student's research and study activities
Assessment of the thesis project

More information

During thei second year (see Offerta Erogata for more information) students usually attend specialized courses that help them appraoch more closely the topic of their dissertation. The specialized courses are thought as to provide up-to-date reviews of most emerging and interesting scientific topics and try to connect students with experts (usually from abroad) in the field

Method of preparation of the thesis

During their second year, the students attend some specialized courses that help them choice the topic of the final dissertation, in agreement with the board and the supervisor, within the most interesting and emerging research topics available. By the end of the second year the candidates present their disseratation project to the board, in a public seminar.

Admission to the third year

The development of the thesis project is assessed by the board during a series of public seminars, where the students discuss the stae they are at, the issues that have still to be solved, and the originality of the proposal.
Also specialized courses end with a final assessment that, usually, entails the critical reading of a piece of recent literature on the course topic, and a final seminar by the class

(SA, seminario) Seminar series, Actuarial Sciences and Finance 0
(SM, seminario) Seminar series, Statistics and Probability 0

More information

The scientific activities of the third year are ussually and fundamentally focused on the development of the thesis project, consisting in a detailed, original research output, with either theoretical or empirical content in a context that is considered by the board as relevant and worth of further research. The thesis is usually written in English.
Besides this major focus, the students attend regularly the seminar series organized within the PHD programme or by the Department of Statistical Sciences.

Method of admission to the final examination

The candidate presents the thesis project in its final form to the Board which considers whether this and the global scientific activity of the student during the whole three years period is satisfactory. Upopn positive assessment, the thesis is sent out to external Reviewers expert in the field who decide whether the thesis can be submitted in (partial) fullfilment of the requirement for the PHD degree. The thesis will then be defended in front of a 3 members commission.

Final examination

DEfense pof the thesis in form of a seminar on the thesis' main results
