More information

The student can attend “Physics Schools” (in summer, winter, spring or autumn) for a maximum of 3 credits. The school must have a minimum duration of 5 days. Upon returning from the mission, the students will present a certificate of participation to the PhD secretariat to validate the 3 credits.

Method of choosing the subject of the thesis

The subject of the PhD thesis is chosen by the PhD student on the basis of his/her personal training and scientific path followed.
If it is not possible to identify specific competences that fully correspond to the choice made locally, it is possible to activate a co-supervision that involves professors at international level.

Admission to the second year

PhD students must
- submit a Study Plan, approved by the thesis Director and the Advisor in the PhD Teaching Board assigned to each PhD student, for a total of 12 credits (about 120 hours). The courses must be chosen among the courses dedicated to the PhD program, possibly also in the University of Tor Vergata and Roma Tre and must be taken by July 31 with an average of 26/30
- submit a Project Plan by October.
The PhD Teaching Board will decide the admission to the second year on the basis of the results of the completed exams and of the Project Plan submitted.

List of courses / activities for the second year

titolocrediti
seminars on science dissemination and preparation for the seminar to be held within the 2nd year 1
participation to the general seminars in the Physics Department 1

More information

The second year is devoted to carrying out the research work. The PhD student will participate in workshops, schools, and conferences to supplement his/her training. The training will also be supplemented by the participation in the general seminars in the Physics Department.

Method of preparation of the thesis

The preparation of the thesis begins, with modalities that are distinctive of the chosen topic.

Admission to the third year

By October of the 2nd year, the PhD student will submit the updated Project Plan to the PhD Teaching Board and will hold a seminar on the topic (in the presence of the PhD Teaching Board and all the PhD students).
The thesis Director will send to the PhD Teaching Board his/her report on the progress of the project.
The PhD Teaching Board will decide the admission to the 3rd year on the basis of the seminar, the updated project, and the progress of the project.

participation to the general seminars in the Physics Department 1

More information

The third year is devoted to completing the research work and writing the thesis. The PhD student will participate in workshops, schools, and conferences to supplement his/her training. The training will also be supplemented by the participation in the general seminars in the Physics Department.

Method of admission to the final examination

The third year is dedicated exclusively to the thesis. By October the PhD students will send their theses to the external evaluators that were chosen by the PhD Teaching Board. The reports of the evaluators are attached to the thesis together with the report of the PhD Teaching Board.
The PhD Teaching Board, based on the reports of the thesis Director and the external evaluators, will decide whether the admission to the final examination is approved in the first session, by the month of February, or in the second session, by the month of September.

Final examination

The Rector forms the commissions that are composed of three members, proposed by the PhD Teaching Board and approved by the Department, and chosen among those who have the specific expertise in the disciplinary areas provided.
One month before the final examination, the PhD student will submit the thesis to the Examination Committee, appointed by the Rector.
The PhD Teaching Board will send to the Examination Committee the report on the activity carried out by the candidates during the PhD course, as well as the reports of the external evaluators. The final examinations must be completed by February 28th or, for PhD candidates with career suspensions or who had a postponement by the external evaluators following a negative judgment, by September 30th.
The PhD student will discuss the thesis to the Examination Committee publicly, in the presence of the thesis Director, the PhD Teaching Board, and all the PhD students.
