More information

It is not required to attend type A/B courses; only participation to seminars and doctoral schools is foreseen, classified as type C. If available, an economic contribution from PhD funds will be granted for the participation to the doctoral schools.

Method of preparation of the thesis

Second year is mainly dedicated to research activity, but the improvement of the doctoral education by means of seminars and doctoral schools is encouraged.

Admission to the third year

In order to be admitted to the third year, students have to:
1. Complete all exams from their study plan;
2. Provide to the PhD Coordinator an extensive report on the state of work on the thesis;
3. Present to the PhD Board their work schedule and the progress of the study on the thesis.

More information

Third year is completely dedicated to research and writing of the thesis.

Method of admission to the final examination

Students prepare a draft of the thesis in English which has to include:
1. An analysis of the state of work
2. A presentation of the results
3. An extensive description of the above mentioned resultes.

The thesis is sent to two internationally renewed referees from the same candidate’s research area. The referees have normally a month and a half to send their reviews on the thesis. After receiving the reviews by the external referees, the candidate draws up the final draft which will be discussed in a seminar addressed to the PhD Board. The PhD Board appoints a committee consisting of five members (among which the advidsor and the co-advisor) which will assess the thesis, the external reviews and the seminar and will express an evaluation on the candidate, to be discussed in the PhD Board.

Final examination

Students discuss their thesis in front of a committee appointed by the Rector and composed of three Professors or field expert among which at least two not from the University.
