Method of preparation of the thesis

The PhD student develops his research project with the guidance of the tutor and the co-tutor, who direct him towards the most appropriate choices for the development of the project itself. The function of the tutor and the co-tutor does not end here, but extends to the entire development of the writing of the thesis. The PhD student is stimulated to confront as much as possible with scholars and critical-interpretive tendencies outside of La Sapienza. For this reason, many PhD students choose on the possible advice of tutors to participate to national and international conferences concerning their research and to expand their study to sources and repertory at home and abroad. In addition, in some cases the tutor facilitates the opportunity offered by the doctorate to carry out a period of study and research abroad.

Admission to the third year

PhD students present their own report to the College on the activity and status of their research, accompanied by a report by the tutor and co-tutor. In the second year the tutor asks the PhD student to prepare an articulated plan of the research-work. The College, assessing the path taken by the PhD student, admits him or not to the following year of course.

Method of admission to the final examination

The thesis, to which is attached a report of the PhD student on the activities carried out during the doctorate and on any publications, is evaluated by at least two highly qualified teachers, appointed by the Teaching College, hereafter called evaluators, also members of foreign institutions. The evaluators make an analytical assessment of the thesis and propose its admission to public discussion or referral for a period not exceeding six months, if they consider that additions or corrections are necessary.

Final examination

The PhD student discusses his thesis in the presence of a committee composed of three members outside Sapienza, who evaluate whether the candidate's thesis is deserving and consequently whether the PhD student can be declared a PhD doctor. A report is drawn up in which an analytical judgment is made on the final examination of the PhD student and on the originality of the research
