More information
The courses are organized jointly with the BeMM Doctoral School - Molecular Biology and Medicine. The first year courses concern preparatory knowledge; in particular, scientific English is crucial for training, laboratory safety provides essential information for the correct stay in the laboratories, and the animal experimentation course offers preliminary information for those who find themselves using animal models during the doctorate.
In general, the PhD student must demonstrate that each year he has participated in a number of seminars (or internships) relating to the topic or methodologies of interest for his project corresponding to at least 1 training credit (at least 10 seminars). The number can be increased or integrated with activities in laboratories other than the one where the doctoral student normally carries out his activity.
Method of choosing the subject of the thesis
Before selection, a number of lines of research are proposed in excess of the number of places available. The winners of the competition for admission to the doctoral course, in order of ranking, will choose the line of research in which to present their project. The theses are all experimental in nature. The presentation of the project will take place both in written and oral form in front of the college of decent (generally around March) and the purpose of the work, the relevance for the advancement of knowledge and the methodology to be used must be clear and distinct. .
The college, if approved, will appoint a guide/supervisor teacher for each project, who will supervise the correct conduct of the research project and, for students who carry out the thesis outside the C. Darwin Department of Biology and Biotechnology, a tutor within the college chosen by the PhD student.
Admission to the second year
At the end of the year, each doctoral student will present a report drawn up in "manuscript to be submitted for publication" style, in a format defined in the guidelines prepared by the College aimed at accustoming the doctoral student to conceiving the work done and to be carried out, and to organizing the results with a view to their publication. Furthermore, each doctoral student will present the results of his research in the form of seminars in English in front of the doctoral course teaching board, the guide/supervisor teacher and any tutor. Each seminar will be followed by a broad discussion in which the doctoral student's preparation and path will be evaluated and any critical issues and variations in the research project will be discussed. The college, having heard the opinion of the lead teacher and the tutor, having assessed the overall path of the doctoral student, will decide on admission to the following year.
