In 1988 he earned his Chemical Engineering degree with marks 110/110 with honors at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. From 1989 to 1991 he worked as process engineer in the Italian engineering company Trecon srl. In this period he was involved mainly in the drawing up of operative manuals and in training activities in the oil and gas industry. By means of the permanence in the oil and refining industry he has developed an in deep knowledge of the refining processes and of the health and safety problems of this industrial sector.
In 1991 he joined the Engineering faculty of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. As assistant professor he spent a short term research e period to the Institut Francaise du Petrol and long term research period to the University of Wyoming (USA)studing new systems for the reduction of pollutants in coal combustion.
Since 2000 he is associate professor of Chemical Engineering in the Sapienza University and he is part of the teaching staff of the Chemical Engineering degree courses where he teaches Industrial Chemical Processes and Oil and Gas Technology. He is in the board of the PhD in Chemical Engineering. He is also member of the steering Committee of the Hydro-eco research centre.
He is author of more than 130 (82 peer reviewed) published works and patents with an h-index of 21 and more than 1200 citations (from Scopus).
He has been unit leader in the PRIN2003 2003031189_005 and scientific leader of the working unit of the Dept. of Chemical Engineering in the FISR Project (2005-10): "Idrogeno Puro da Gas Naturale mediante Reforming a Conversione Totale ottenuta integrando Reazione Chimica e Separazione a Membrana".
In 2008 he was invited lecturer in the Royal Chemical Society/Shell Castle Conversation, UK.
In the last years the research activity is mainly targeted to fundamental and applicative studies in the reduction of incineration emissions and in the production of syngas and hydrogen by gasification processes using oxygen/air and steam mixture, pyrolysis and reforming processes of biomasses and of civil and industrial wastes. Related to this activity he is also member of the scientific advisory committee of the International Conferences on Waste Management and Environment and is on the scientific board of the open Journal of Waste Management.
Other research activity was inherent to the study and development of chemical processes particularly related to the valorization of petroleum heavy ends, the treatment and recovery of industrial wastes, the thermochemical conversion of biomass in liquid fuels.
The more applicative results of the research, often developed in cooperation with national and international public and private companies give rise to the filing of more than 10 patents.
