Research: Jesuits, Dominicans, and Franciscans in China (Late 16th – Early 17th Century): Semantic Evolution of a Selection of Catholic Terms in a Century of Translations (Provisional)

ABSTRACT
Between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Jesuits, Dominicans, and Franciscans undertook extensive translation work in China to convey Christian concepts within a new cultural context. The project aims to reconstruct the semantic evolution of a selection of Catholic terms in doctrinal works and missionary dictionaries, analyzing translation strategies and terminological exchanges between different orders. The investigation, based on Chinese and Western sources, will clarify lexical variations, inter-congregational relationships, and provide more accurate translations.
