ABSTRACT
This PhD project falls within the scope of diachronic syntactic analysis of the Chinese language, focusing on the Europeanization of grammar (ouhua yufa). The primary objective is to investigate and map the phenomenon of the subordinative clause postposition relative to the main clause, as it alters one of the fundamental structures of traditional Chinese syntax, thereby filling a gap in diachronic studies conducted to date on digital corpora. The methodology adopted is that of Corpus Linguistics, aimed at overcoming the limitations of sampling and systematicity observed in previous studies. The data analyzed derive specifically from vernacular novels produced during the crucial transition period between the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China (1840–1928), a phase characterized by the dynamic development of both society and the language.
