Since January 2022 Marianna Villano is associate professor (SSD: ING-IND/25) at the Department of Chemistry- Sapienza University of Rome. She got the Master of Science (5-year degree) with honors in Industrial Chemistry (2007) and the PhD in Industrial Chemical Processes (2011) defending the thesis “Microbially catalyzed production of hydrogen and methane in bioelectrochemical systems". In 2010 she spent six months at the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering-Cornell University (Ithaca, NY, USA) as a visiting PhD student.
She is co-chair of the working group “Valorization of organics” of the Environmental Biotechnology section of the European Federation of Biotechnology (EB-EFB) and elected member (September 2021) of the Board of Directors of the International Society for Microbial Electrochemistry and Technology (ISMET, https://is-met.org/).
She is member of the editorial board of the Journals: Scientific Reports (Springer Nature, https://www.nature.com/srep/about/editors#engineering_section); Processes (MDPI, https://www.mdpi.com/journal/processes/editors?page_no=16); Environments (MDPI, https://www.mdpi.com/journal/environments/editors?page_no=3); Catalysts (MDPI, https://www.mdpi.com/journal/catalysts/editors?page_no=8).
Presently, she is lecturer of the course “Chemical Processes and Plants I” (in Italian, Bachelor degree in Chemical Sciences) and of the course “Treatment Processes of waste and wastewater with material and energy recovery” (in Italian, Master degree in Industrial Chemistry). She is co-teacher of the course “Biotechnology applied to environmental remediation” (Master degree in Biochemistry).
Her main research activities focus on the development of biochemical processes for waste management and resource recovery, mainly based on the use of mixed microbial cultures. The studied processes mainly aim at the production of bio-based and biodegradable polymers (i.e., polyhydroxyalkanoates, PHA) as well as at the application of Microbial Electrochemical Technologies (MET) to upgrade the biogas or to control the spectrum of products deriving from acidogenic fermentation. In the frame of this research activity Marianna Villano participated to several national and international projects, and she has been the scientific responsible of the Sapienza research unit for the European H2020 project “USABLE Packaging” (Unlocking the potential of SustainAble BiodegredabLE Packaging, G.A. No. 836884). She is presently the scientific responsible of the Sapienza research unit for the European HE project “AgriLoop” (Pushing the frontier of circular agriculture by converting residues into novel economic, social and environmental opportunities, G.A. No. 1010181776; 2022-2026)
In this context, she is author of about 70 international peer-review journal publications, 5 book chapter, and over 50 presentations to international conferences.
