ABSTRACT
This research project aims to analyze the diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea, Italy and the Vatican during the Cold War period and the profound geopolitical and religious changes of the time. Starting from the consolidation of bilateral relations, the study will investigate the role of Rome, both the Italian capital and the seat of the Vatican, as a strategic diplomatic and religious center; the contribution of the Holy See to the international legitimacy of the South Korean government, the promotion of anti-communism, and tensions related to human rights will also be explored. Through the analysis of primary sources and an interdisciplinary approach, the research will offer a new interpretation of the relationship between political and religious diplomacy in the Asian region, while examining how the Holy See and Italy jointly supported human rights and mediated relations with Park Chung-hee’s regime through the interplay of religious and state diplomacy.
