EDUCATION, PRESENT ACADEMIC STATUS, ACADEMIC AFFILIATION
Marco Bravi was born on September 10, 1963 at Imola. He holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from Sapienza Università di Roma (1988) and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Bologna (1993). He is an Associate Professor of Chemical Equipment Design since 2001, having teaching duties at the Faculty of Engineering of Sapienza University of Roma (“Food and Biochemical Equipment Design” and "Nanobiotechnology") and at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Padova (“Winery Biorefinery and Waste Management”).

RESEARCH THEMES
Marco Bravi's scientific activity has covered the following themes and specific subjects:
BIOREFINERY OPERATIONS: 1. Experimental investigations on the use of adjustable polarity and hydrophilicity solvents. 2. Experimental investigations on the extraction of vegetal matrices by supercritical CO2 (sunflower, grapeseed). 3. Modelling and technical and economical analysis of the supercritical extraction applied to food substances.
BIOPROCESSES: 1. Development of bioreactors and bioprocesses for microalgal and fungal fermentations; 2. Experimental activity concerning the production of citrates from glucidic substrates by means of yeasts (analysis of production batch, repeated batch, fed-batch cultures and biomass separation by means of microfiltration); 3. production of pharmaceuticals/nutraceuticals by microalgal cultures (underway); 4. modelling of fermentation by artificial neural networks; 5. Modelling of red winemaking (phenomenological approach to anthocyanins and tannins extraction; simultaneous prediction of phenolics extraction and fermentation).
MEMBRANE PROCESSES: Development of membrane processes for the treatment of agro-food wastewaters and microbial cultures.
CRYSTALLISATION: 1. Experimental investigation of physical and mechanical phenomena occurring in industrial crystallisers (nucleation, growth, attrition, breakage). 2. Modelling of industrial crystallisers. 3. Set-up of crystalliser monitoring and control instruments and strategies.
DISTILLATION: Inferential control systems for distillation columns.
OTHER: Fruit juice concentration; Use of artificial olfactometry for the monitoring and characterisation of wine products; Fouling of Heat exchangers.

Prof. Bravi had held seminars for nationally and internationally recognised research institutions. Latest seminar:
