Relevant Experiences
Luca Persia has been studying transport systems for twenty-five years, with a specific focus on urban passenger transport systems and road safety. He has conducted various research activities, combining them with practical applications in strategic projects. He has joined in National and International research projects (European Commission, World Bank, OECD), feasibility studies, as well as mobility, road safety and ITS plans.
Luca Persia is also active in educational activities, organization of scientific conferences, review of articles for International scientific journals.
He is member of relevant international Research Networks, in some of them on behalf of the Italy and with coordination roles:
 FERSI (Forum of European Road Safety Research Institutes) – Member of the Executive Board
 IRTAD (International Traffic Safety Data and Analysis Group, OECD - International Transport Forum)
 ETSC (European Transport Safety Council)
His main fields of research are:
 Sustainable Transport Policies
 Road Accident Analysis and Safety Countermeasures Planning
 Cycling Mobility Systems
 Intelligent Transport Systems
 Transport Pricing Measures
These activities are conducted with the direct support of a multi-disciplinary team (Transport Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information System Engineering and Statistics) made of collaborators within the Research Centre for Transport and Logistics (CTL). Within such context, Luca Persia coordinated the development and dissemination of various information systems, which are now adopted at National and International level:

 SFINGE information System for collection, management and evaluation of road accidents’ data.
 ISIDE information system for supporting decision-making on road safety measures planning.
 PCA information system for planning road safety measures concerning pedestrians and cyclists.
 Information system for in-depth investigation, created within the SAFETYNET project for the collection and the evaluation of in-depth investigation data.
 SAFERBRAIN DSS information system for Vulnerable Road User safety management.
 SAFETY MANAGER information system for Road Safety Observatories management and for road infrastructure safety management.
Among the projects recently/currently coordinated by Luca Persia, the following are mainly relevant:

 SAFERAFRICA (European Commission, DG Research) aiming at the creation of an Euro-African Dialogue Platform on Road Safety, in order to make the African roads safer. The project deals with several aspects of road safety problems in the African Continent, eg accident data collection, road safety management capacity reviews, capacity building through appropriate training, dissemination of best practices. An African Road safety Observatory is being created.
 CONCEPTION ET MISE EN PLACE DES BASES DE DONNEES DES ACCIDENTS DE LA CIRCULATION ET D’UN SYSTÈME D’INFORMATION SUR LA SECURITE ROUTIERE AU CAMEROUN (World Bank, République du Cameroun) for the creation of a system (conceptual and practical) for road accident data management in Cameroon. An information system is being developed to support Police Forces in accident data collection and management. Moreover, a national Observatory is being created, in order to allow analysis of main accident causes and definition of most suitable and efficient road safety policies.
 SAFERBRAIN Project (European – Commission DG MOVE) for the improvement of road safety in Brazil and India. This project has been conducted by a consortium of European, Brazilian and Indian partners, developing innovative methodologies and tools for the improvement of road safety concerning vulnerable users (pedestrians and cyclists) in Brazil and India, supported by the results of the European research. The project developed a DSS (Decision Support System) information system for planning road safety measures.
 BeSafe Project (European Commission - Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency) for the introduction of the Road safety research programs in the Belarus University system. The Project includes a consortium of Italian, British, Greek, Norwegian, Israeli partners, along with several Universities from Minsk and other main cities of Belarus. The main aim is to introduce research and teaching programs in the Belarus University curricula, but also the exchange of researchers and students between Belarus and the involved European Countries and to develop road safety national plans.
 National project “Monitoraggio e Assistenza Tecnica all’Attuazione del Piano Nazionale della Sicurezza Stradale” (Monitoring and Technical Assistance to the Implementation of the National Road Safety Plan) for the Italian Government (Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport – Road Safety General Directorate). The project, including a consortium of Italian partners and supported by a team of International experts, aimed at the analysis and evaluation of real results achieved by PNSS (National Road Safety Plan) during the last years, the development of scientific methodologies for the forecasting of the results of future policies, at the definition of the National Strategic Plan for the next decade. The project also developed a National database of road accidents and a National Observatory on Road Safety
Luca Persia is also Editor of the on-line News-Magazine “Road Safety” (www.ctluniroma1.it) focused on the most important results achieved in the international projects and Reviewer for many international Journals and Magazine: Accident Analysis and Prevention, Safety Science, International Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion, European Transport Research Review.
