After teaching at the University of Catanzaro, as associate professor from 1987 and full professor from 1990, and at the University of Naples “Federico II”, Laura Moscati is full professor of History of Medieval and Modern Law since November 2004 and History of European Law since November 2016 at Sapienza Law School. Professor Moscati has been Director of the PhD School in Legal Sciences, Director of the PhD Programme in “Private Autonomy, Business, Work and Protection of Rights in European and International Perspective” at Sapienza Law School (2018-2024), and member of the scientific committee of the Master Programme in “European Private Law” and of the Master Programme in “Global Regulation of Markets” until the end of its activities. Representative for Europe in the Governance of Sapienza University and Representative of the Department of Legal Sciences for the activities related to the social and economic impact of academic research (Sapienza Outreach), Rector’s delegate for the International Affairs of Sapienza Law School, she is also member of the Select Committee at the Department of Legal Sciences and coordinator of the Section of History of Italian Law. At Sapienza Law School she is in charge of the Double Degree Programme in Italian and French Law with the University of Paris Panthéon-Assas, of the multiple degree programme “Juriste Européen” of the European Law School and of the agreements with American universities (Columbia Law School, Suffolk University, University of Missouri- Kansas City, Cornell University and Fordham University). Professor Moscati is full member of the “Società Romana di Storia Patria” and of the “Deputazione Subalpina di Storia Patria”; full member, and member of the steering committee from 2001 to 2007, of the “Società Italiana di Storia del Diritto”; full member, and member of the steering committee since 2009, of the “Société d’Histoire du Droit”; since 2001 full member of the “Fondazione Sergio Mochi Onory per la Storia del diritto italiano”; since 2019 honorary member of the “Associazione Civilisti Italiani”. She is also vice-director of the “Rivista di Storia del diritto italiano”, member of the Direction of the “Rivista del Diritto Commerciale”, member of the steering committee of “Rivista italiana per le scienze giuridiche”; member of the scientific committee of “Droits. Revue française de théorie, de philosophie et de culture juridiques”, “Il diritto di autore”, “Giustizia”, “French Journal of Legal Policy”, “Nomos. Le attualità del diritto”; she is member of the scientific committee of the Enciclopedia del diritto published by Giuffrè. From 2004 to 2009 she has been member of the scientific board of the Italian-French University. Professor Moscati has carried out many research and teaching activities in Italy and abroad, and has held lectures in national and international congresses; she has been Professeur Invité at the University of Montpellier (2006-2007), and since 2002 she has been several times Professeur Invité at the University of Paris Panthéon-Assas; since 2018 she has taught at the Humboldt University of Berlin. In 2019 and 2023 she has been visiting professor at Columbia University and since 2019 she has also been professor of History of European Law at the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, Wuhan (China). She has written over 190 publications and has developed her research activity in many fields of the history of law, in particular: Rome’s municipality in the central centuries of the Middle Ages; the rediscovery and study of the legal sources and their critical editions in the 19th century; the relations between the Italian legal culture, the French legal science and the German historical school of law, with specific reference to Savigny; the history of private law, with particular reference to specific institutions, as the legal regime of waters, the droit d’auteur and the copyright; the French commercial codification and J.M. Pardessus’ contribution; the effects of the economic crises on contract law in the 19th century in Italy and France; the development of civil law studies at Sapienza University at the beginning of the 20th century.
