Research Activity

He is the author of 235 publications on international journal or national and/or international conferences proceedings (174 on Scopus database, 185 on Scopus or ISI database).
The main research fields are:
A)Nanomaterials and nanotechnology for environmental remediation
B)Waste materials recovery, valorisation and reuse
C)Chemical, electrochemical and bioelectrochemical technologies of the oxidation of water polluted by toxic and recalcitrant compounds
D)Solidification/stabilization technology and aggregate production from wastes
E)Polluted sites remediation technologies and materials recovery

He also serves as a referee for the main international journal in the field of environmental technologies and applied chemistry.
He is also member of the Editorial Board of:

• Responsible of Sapienza Unit in the project funded by the Italian Ministry of Health: "Biotechnologies for sustainable development", in the 2011 CCM Programme.
• Coordinator of research project with INAIL (Italian Workers' Compensation Authority): "Polluted sediments remediation by biosurfactant enhanced washing and biodegradation"

• Since 1994 he coordinates or participates to Research Programs funded by Sapienza University, in the field of:
- Polluted sites remediation by in situ chemical oxidation technologies;
- Pesticides oxidation in the presence of iron mineral catalyst;
- Heavy metal mobilization from marine sediments by chelant washing;
- Soil remediation by coupling thermal and chemical treatments;
- Experimental set up of lab scale microbial fuel cell for the treatment of agricultural and industrial wastes.

• In May 2002, he obtained from the Italian Research Ministry a grant as young researcher for a research on Remediation of soil contaminated by pesticides.
• He participated to the UE research project "Adsorption on natural and cementitious materials for industrial waste management", CEE contract n° CI1-CT 92 – 0107 (1993-1997).
• He also participated to the following PRIN funded by the Italian Ministry of Research:
1. COFIN 1996: National Research Project “Residues and wastes: environmental protection and remediation”;
2. COFIN 1999: National Research Project “Electro-chemical technologies for the treatment of hazardous and recalcitrant compounds”;
3. COFIN 2002: National Research Project “Oxidation at room temperature of toxic and recalcitrant organic compounds in wastewaters through radicals generated by chemical or electrochemical systems”.
4. PRIN 2006: National Research Project “Engineering of advanced electrochemical processes for the treatment of industrial effluents”

• Between 1994 and 2006 he has also participated to nine research projects funded by ISPESL (National Agency for Occupational Health and Safety).
• He was the PI of several Research Project funded by private companies or public agencies.

He was the tutor of 82 Master Degrees Thesis, 188 B.Sc. Thesis and 10 PhD thesis, as well as member of several national panels for the admission to the PhD course, the final PhD exam, and for the allocation of Research Scholarship and Grants.
