Research: Giuseppe Verdi in Vienna (1843-1919)

My project proposes an extensive study of the cultural reception of Giuseppe Verdi's operas in Vienna through two parallel perspectives.
The first aspect is to investigate the production criteria of Giuseppe Verdi's operas in Vienna during the most tense years of political relations between Italy and Austria (1848 uprising, Italian Risorgimento, Triple Alliance and World War I).
The second aspect of the study proposes to identify and problematise the possible effects of Verdi's aesthetics on the cultural life of finis Austriae.
The aim of the research will be to describe the figure of Giuseppe Verdi through criteria of internationality and transculturality, in order to bring the composer closer to one of the most fascinating European cultural civilisations of the late 19th century.
