Research: Environment-induced risk assessment as a preventive conservation strategy for an effective long-term management of safety cinematographic archives

Ph.D. student in Earth Sciences - Curriculum "Environment and Cultural Heritage" - 37th PON cycle, with a project titled "Environment-induced risk assessment as a preventive conservation strategy for an effective long-term management of safety cinematographic archives". The overall objective is to develop a strategy for assessing the impact of acetic acid and microclimate conditions on cellulose acetate films preserved in cinematographic archives. This allows the definition of tailored preventive conservation measures to monitor and limit the degradation phenomenon known as Vinegar Syndrome. Specific objectives include: (i) To understand how the microclimate characterization of multi-room archives housing cellulose acetate films can orient the Vinegar Syndrome monitoring; (ii) To make objective and quantitative the reading of colour-change acetic acid passive samplers through spectrophotocolorimetry, while maintaining their applicability for archival inspections; (iii) To characterize the complex Vinegar Syndrome phenomenon through infrared spectroscopy, while exploring the relationship between acetic acid emission and film degree of deacetylation. The two case studies selected to test the proposed strategy are the Cineteca Nazionale of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, and the Arquivo Nacional das Imagens em Movimento of the Cinemateca Portuguesa in Lisbon.
