Phd in STRUCTURAL AND GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING

Linda Giresini is an Associate Professor of Structural Design at the Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering of Sapienza University of Rome, where she teaches Structural Design and Structural Engineering of Ancient and Modern Buildings at the Faculty of Architecture. In 2021, she received the Italian National Scientific Habilitation (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale) for the position of Full Professor. She graduated cum laude in Structural Engineering from the University of Pisa in 2011, where she also earned her Ph.D. in 2015. During her academic career, she conducted research abroad at RWTH Aachen University and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany, as well as the University of Minho in Portugal.

She has authored approximately 120 international publications, including 88 papers in peer-reviewed, indexed journals and conference proceedings. Since 2018, she has been the inventor and exclusive patent holder of a dissipative device designed to mitigate seismic risk in tie-rod-restrained masonry facades. Furthermore, she holds two patents: one for a device leveraging smooth and controlled rocking to mitigate earthquake and transport-induced vibrations for statues, artwork, and slender structures; and another for hybrid glass-and-steel showcases used for displaying and transporting valuable artifacts.

Dr. Giresini serves—or has served—as the principal investigator for nationally funded projects and research agreements with public institutions. These projects focus on seismic and hydrogeological risk reduction for historically and artistically significant structures, sustainable integrated interventions for existing buildings, and the preservation of architectural and archaeological heritage. She has organized numerous sessions and mini-symposia at international conferences on structural dynamics and the optimization of retrofit design for existing structures. Additionally, she is an editorial board member and reviewer for several leading journals in structural and earthquake engineering.
Her primary research interests include applied structural dynamics, earthquake engineering, experimental testing on masonry and reinforced concrete structures, and the seismic vulnerability of existing buildings. Her work also covers advanced structural modeling under dynamic loads, low-cost structural solutions for developing countries, structural and architectural rehabilitation of archaeological sites, sustainable and resilient infrastructure (with a specific focus on short-span bridges), and integrated sustainable interventions for existing structures within a Life Cycle Thinking framework.
