Thesis title: Un’intricata rete di poteri: la lotta alle “superstizioni" nelle campagne alle porte di Roma e di Venezia (1570-1623)

This thesis aims to investigate the strategies employed by both ecclesiastical and secular authorities to counter the spread of "superstitions" in rural areas during the period following the Council of Trent and preceding the death of Pope Paul V (1621) and the papal bull Omnipotentis Dei issued by Gregory XV in 1623. Through a comparative analysis of the Republic of Venice and the Papal States, and by drawing on a wide range of religious and political documentary sources, a complex network of actors involved in the struggle against superstitions has emerged.
