Italo Pantani is Associate Professor of Italian Literature (ssd L-FIL-LET / 10) at the "Sapienza. University of Rome", Faculty of Letters and Philosophy, Department of Letters and Modern Cultures. From 1 August 2018 he is qualified as a first level teacher. From 19 February 2016 to 4 July 2018 he was President of the master's degree course in "Modern Philology".
Previously he followed a training and professional path leading to the achievement, in 1988, of the degree in Italian literature at the University "La Sapienza" (110/110 with honors); in 1994, of the PhD in "Italian Studies. Humanistic literature" at the University of Messina. Also in Messina, between 1995 and 1997, he benefited from a two-year post-doctoral scholarship. Became in 1992, as a winner of a competition in professorships, a professor of Literary and Latin subjects in high schools, he taught in high schools until 1 December 1998, when (again through a competition) he obtained the qualification of researcher of Italian literature at the University "La Sapienza". Obtained the National Scientific Qualification (Call 2012) in the ssd L-FIL-LET / 10 (Italian literature) and L-FIL-LET / 13 (Philology of Italian literature), from 1 October 2015 he plays the current role.
During the period of employment as a researcher, the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy entrusted him with three annual substitutes: for the teaching of Medieval and Humanistic Philology in the academic year 1999-2000, and of Italian literature in the academic years 2002-03 and 2003-04. With the introduction of the new regulations, he carried out semesterly or annual courses for the ssd L-FIL-LET / 10 from 2002 to 2010 in the three-year degree course "Italian studies" (later merged into the current "Modern Letters"). Since the academic year 2011-12 he has been carrying out teaching modules for the LM-14 Master's Degree Course: in the past called "Literature and language. Italian and European studies", from the academic year 2014-15 "Modern Philology". From 2013 to 2018 he was a member of the Review Group of this Course, and to date also of the Commission for the approval of the study plans; during the years of the Presidency, in addition to carrying out the ordinary tasks, he twice coordinated the modification of the Order, in response to educational needs and legislative changes. Since the academic year 2015-16 he also holds, once again, annual courses in Italian literature for the three-year degree Course in Modern Letters (L-10).
Between 2002 and 2005 he was a member of the teaching staff of the international PhD "The Italian Renaissance in a European perspective"; currently he plays the same role for the PhD in Italian Studies. He lectured at the Doctoral Schools of the Universities of Lausanne (2009), Turin (2010 and 2020), Messina (2011), Venice (2014), Bologna (2016), and Aix-en-Provence (École d'été 2019). Between September 2015 and April 2016 he was a member of three selection boards for the achievement of the PhD title: in Philosophy at the University of Durham (UK); in Literary Sciences. Rhetoric and interpretation technique at the University of Calabria; in Ancient and Modern Philology at the University of Messina. In 2012 he was president of the Central Commission of "Sapienza" for the competition for admission to the Active Training Internship (TFA), qualification class A051 (Literary subjects and Latin in high schools).
He is the director of the "Poetry of the fifteenth century" series at the Edizioni dell'Orso in Alessandria; and of the Catalog of the ancient Italian book of poetry (CLIAP), a database of poetry books printed between 1470 and 1600, created and published online thanks to funding from the University. He is a member of the scientific commission of the annual magazine "Humanitas. Revista de Estudos Clássicos ”(Universidade de Coimbra), of the" Lyra "project (Lausanne) and of the bimonthly periodical" Diacritica ". He was part of the local research units of the PRIN 1999 (The reception of the 'auctores' in Humanism), 2001 (Traditions and Texts. Editions, studies and tools for the Italian Digital Library), 2005 (Italian poetry and the father Petrarca: types and forms of the lyrical experience of the Renaissance and Baroque), and is currently among the components of the "Sapienza" unit of the PRIN 2019 funded project, “Lyric books in early modernity in Italy: digital archives and new editorial practices”. His research projects were funded by the University in the years 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018. In 2006 he obtained funding from the Valmontone municipal administration for the organization of a conference and new investigations on the poet Giusto de' Conti.
The area of study to which he has devoted most of his research has so far been the poetic tradition, especially from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance: first probed through a vast bibliography of fifteenth-sixteenth-century editions ("Biblia. Book library ancient Italian. Poetry books ", Milan 1996); a volume dedicated to the influence of Petrarch's Canzoniere on 15th century Ferrarese poetry ("The source of every eloquence", Rome 2002); the monograph "L’amoroso messer Giusto da Valmontone" (Rome 2006); the collection of essays "Responsa poetae" (Rome 2012), focused on the genre of correspondence in verse, Latin and vulgar, between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries; and numerous other studies, dedicated to authors such as Sannazaro, Ariosto, Della Casa, Carducci, as well as to seasons (papacy of Julius II) and questions (metric classicism, poetry and typography) of literary history. He has participated in numerous national and international conferences, held in Los Angeles (The filigree hiding the gothic. The Malatesti, UCLA 2006), Coimbra (Aires Barbosa na Cosmopólis renascentista, 2011), Durham (Society for Italian Studies Biennial Conference, 2013), Berlin (Italienische und lateinische Lyrik in Ferrara um 1480, Humboldt-Universität 2014), Freiburg (Lyric in Italy 1494-1530. Ecdotic experiences and historiographic profiles, University of Freiburg 2016).
He was also the scientific manager of the multimedia work "Travel in the text", financed by the Directorate General for Book Heritage and published by “Cultural Internet” (2006-2008). For specific interest, cultivated since the years of teaching in high schools, he participated in the creation of works with popular purposes: such as the history and anthology of Italian literature directed by G. Ferroni; various items (Decadentism - Enlightenment - Romanticism - Metric - Literaries, genres - Literature, theory of) prepared for the VII Appendix of the Treccani Encyclopedia (Rome 2006-07); the chapter "The philology and poetry of humanists", prepared for the volume "Literature" of the work "The Italian contribution to the history of thought" (Rome 2018); and the "Medieval Age" module for the ICON telematic consortium. In the framework of his didactic commitment, he was able to attract and solicit the scientific industriousness of several young people who, in some cases, managed to continue the research started on the occasion of the degree thesis in the context of various Italian doctoral schools (Rome , Cagliari, Cosenza) and European (Durham). The results of these researches, often integral parts of the aforementioned research projects funded by the University, were presented through special panels held in the context of the ADI (Association of Italian Italianists) congresses of 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018.
