Thesis of Title:
STYLISTIC, STRUCTURAL AND DISCURSIVE PRACTICES IN REPRESENTING THE 2014 CRIMEAN CRISIS IN THE NEWS DISCOURSE (BASED ON THE COVERAGE BY RUSSIAN SPEAKING EDITORIALS OF DEUTSCHE WELLE, RADIO LIBERTY, AND RT)
Abstract: In this thesis, the researcher examines how three Russian-language news outlets — Deutsche Welle, Radio Liberty and RT — framed the 2014 Crimean crisis. Using a corpus of 826 online news items from 20 February to 21 March 2014, the study applies Critical Discourse Analysis and Corpus-Assisted Discourse Analysis to uncover each outlet’s stylistic, structural and discursive tactics and strategies. The author shows how RT’s “reclamation” rhetoric, DW’s mediating stance and Radio Liberty’s resistant counter-narrative shape competing political realities in the news discourse by linking idealogical inclinations and editorial missions with linguistic choices.
