Research: L'immaginazione operativa di Giordano Bruno

The purpose of my research project is to investigate the concept of imaginatio through a compared analysis of Bruno’s works, in order to develop an interpretation of Nolano’s way of conceiving and writing. If “thinking in pictures” is obvious in the mnemonic works, nevertheless it appears as the signature of the entire “nova filosofia”, and it is the trait d’union between the Italian and the magical works. Therefore, through consultation of Bruno’s ancient and contemporary sources where this theme is more evident (Aristotle, Plotinus, Boethius, Origen, Llull, Ficino, Agrippa, Pietro Ramo, Giulio Camillo), I intend to identify the methodological constants that allow the Nolano to discover a real philosophical-ideographic systematicity, where the synthetic-imaginative gaze mixes with the discursive-demonstrative aspect. I will also focus on the analysis of Bruno’s iconographic corpus, in order to find symbolic coincidences that are required to clarify the texts’ apparent, and sometimes deliberate, non-exhaustivity. This working hypothesis intends to highlight the correlation between Bruno's praxis and imaginative versatility, “sola porta omnium affectuum”, in his elements of continuity and innovation compared to tradition.
