Written between June 3 and August 16, 1939, and published in May 1941 as the opening volume of the «Narratori contemporanei», Paesi tuoi is not only Pavese’s debut as a novelist, but it also marks the occasion of his first and full consecration to the attention of critics, who from that moment on would always follow his work closely.
This work presents the critical edition of the novel, accompanied by an essay on the work in which an attempt is made to assess the “specific weight” of Paesi tuoi within Pavese’s «monolito» both in terms of its thematic connections with his previous and subsequent works and, on an external front, by evaluating the inevitable influence exerted by his debut novel – while Pavese was still alive – on the interpretation of his subsequent works.
