Research: On difficult heritage and memory-making. Sites of trauma and sites of perpetrators in the aftermath of Albania’s dictatorship

Giulia Avanza is PhD student in Heritage Science - Analysis and management of cultural heritage at Sapienza University of Rome.
Her thesis explores how Albania has been confronting the material legacy of the socialist regime, with a particular focus on the treatment - or neglect - of sites that once symbolized political power and repression.
It examines, in parallel, sites of trauma and perpetrator sites, tracing the different trajectories and destinies experienced by each typology of sites.
She holds a Master in Economics and Management for Arts and Culture and a Diploma in International Cooperation and Development.
Giulia is co-founder of the Italian Chapter of the Association of Critical Heritage Studies and a member of the Memory Studies Association.
