Present Position:
Associate Professor - SSD BIO/10 - Dip. di Scienze Biochimiche Sapienza Università di Roma
Bio sketch:
Giorgio Giardina started his academic career in organic synthesis in 1999 and moved to Structural Biology in 2003, acquiring the PhD in 2006 in the Dep. of Biochemical Sciences at Sapienza University of Rome. He is now Associate Professor in Biochemistry and Structural Biology in the same department. During his career he has solved many protein structures using X-ray crystallography and has been mainly involved in the structure/function study of: i) Human PLP dependent enzyme such as Serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT), Dopa decarboxylase (DDC) and Alanine:glyoxylate amino transferase (AGT) all involved in severe pathologies and/or cancer, ii) Proteins from Pseudomonas aeruginosa involved in the regulation of biofilm formation or/and the denitrification pathways. As many others in the field he is now combining X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM.
Teaching duties:
