The proposed research aims to investigate contamination-related environmental justice in a study area, with the objective of: (a) identifying the spatial patterns of injustice and detect the 'sacrifice zones', where contamination is intertwined with socio-economic disadvantage; (b) tracing the historical backdrop of environmental injustice in specific sacrifice zones, shedding light on historical causes, socio-ecological relationships, and lived experiences of local communities; (c) exploring the expectations and preferences of people living in sacrifice zones about the future of their environment. The study focuses on Campania region (Italy) known for its environmental challenges. It employs a multidimensional approach that integrates spatial analysis, oral history, and community engagement methods. By combining these methodologies, it seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of environmental justice issues, offering insights applicable globally, and to inform future local initiatives and policies.
