Research: Vico and Marx in the intellectual debate in Italy and France during the Belle Époque: Antonio Labriola, Georges Sorel, Benedetto Croce and Giovanni Gentile

This project aims to investigate the presence, influence and interaction between Giambattista Vico and Karl Marx's philosophies in the context of the first major elaboration of theoretical Marxism in Italy and France at the Belle Époque. In this work, I would like to highlight especially the role that Vico's thought, as an element of philosophical mediation, could have played in the penetration and local theorization of a doctrine, such as Marxism, in both cases alien and not internal to the respective philosophical traditions. Without limiting itself to it, the study of this singular relationship (Vico-Marx) will especially focus on the production, both essays and letters, of Antonio Labriola, Georges Sorel, Benedetto Croce and Giovanni Gentile: a transnational intellectual network which was shaped by their critical analysis of Marx’s thought.
