Francesco Berno is Senior Assistant Professor in History of Christianity at Sapienza University of Rome and qualified as Associate Professor in the S.C. 11 / A4, s.s.d. M-STO / 07 (History of Christianity and of the Churches). Since September 2017 he has been a research fellow for the ERC “PAThs” Project (P.I. P. Buzi). Previously he carried out research at the Gotha Research Center of the University of Erfurt.
His researches focus mainly on early Christianity; on Late Antique Christian literature (with particular attention to the Coptic tradition); on the Nag Hammadi library and its historical-religious context of production and use; on the genesis and evolution of the notions of ‘canonical’ and ‘apocryphal’.
He is a member of the editorial board of the following scientific journals: Annals of the History of Exegesis (ASE), Studies and Materials of the History of Religions (SMSR) and Secretary and member of the Roman editorial board of Theology and Philosophy.
He is a member of the following scientific societies: Consulta Universitaria per la Storia del Cristianesimo e delle Chiese (CUSCC), Italian Research Group on Origen and the Alexandrian Tradition (GIROTA), Italian Society for the History of Religions (SISR), European Association for the History of Religions (EASR), International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR), Society of Biblical Literature (SBL).
He is a member of the scientific committee of the Italian Center for Higher Studies on Religions (CISSR)
