Thesis title: Le iscrizioni osche di Pompei nel quadro sociolinguistico della città

This study collects and analyses, from both historical-archaeological and linguistic perspectives, the entire Oscan epigraphic corpus of Pompeii, including materials unearthed during the most recent excavation campaigns. The corpus is accompanied by an overview of the city’s sociolinguistic landscape across its different phases (Etruscan, Samnite, and Roman) up to the fateful eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The work is divided into two closely interconnected sections. The first presents the edition of the texts together with their linguistic analysis. The second offers a comprehensive reinterpretation of the corpus in light of the pronounced multilingualism and complex cultural stratification that characterize the Vesuvian centre, both synchronically and diachronically. Particular attention is devoted to the multiple strands of Greek and Roman influence and to the ways in which these contributed to shaping Pompeii’s linguistic identity, making its Oscan epigraphic production an exemplary case study in the dynamics and outcomes of linguistic and cultural contact.
