Federica Simonetti graduated from the University of Perugia, with a BA in chemistry ,with a thesis on a wastewater treatment method for surfactants removal and a MA in Physical Chemistry, with a dissertion on light scattering methods employed in the field of the analysis of complex systems (e.g. biological tissues). Later on, she has achieved the qualification in the register for the profession of chemist and a Second Level Master at the University Sapienza of Rome in Forensic Analytical Methodologies. Her PhD research has been carried out in the field of environmental monitoring, from risk assesment for water supply systems, with an emphasis on the risk analysis methods (qualitative, semi-qualitative and quantitative) and tools (FMEA, QCRA),until the development of fast and smart environmental monitoring systems (sensors and biosensors), and the official analytical techniques for method validation. Throughout the pandemic, Dr. Simonetti led a quantitative and semi-quantitative risk analysis for a real wastewater treatment plant (WWT), and developed a describing model for the time series of COVID-19 in wastewater. In the second part of her doctorate, she is developing and designing sensors and biosensors, through the employment of inorganic nanostructured systems, electrochemical techniques (conduttimetry and potentiometry) and optical techniques (UV-vis, SERS, DLS, optical microscopy); such tools will be employed for the environmental analysis of water and air samples directly in situ. Meanwhile, she is studying in detail the official monitoring methods , such as liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, which are used in the analysis of contaminants present in water and air. The activities are taking place at the Quality of Water and Health (QAS) Department of the Superior Institute of Health and at the sensors and biosensors laboratories, in the Department of Chemistry and Drugs Technologies of the University La Sapienza.
