CURRICULUM VITAE
Enrico Giorgi is Professor of Ancient Topography at the University of Bologna, where he was a member of the Academic Board of the PhD in History and Archaeology (2017-2023) and is Professor of Landscape Archaeology and City Archaeology for the Master’s degree courses and for the Specialisation School in Archaeological Heritage.
At the University of Bologna he obtained the title of Specialist in Archaeology and a PhD in Ancient Topography and Landscape Archaeology. From autumn 2023 he is member of the Academic Board of the PhD in Archaeology of ‘Sapienza’ University of Rome.
He is Founder and Editor of the open access peer-reviewed e-journal GROMA. DOCUMENTING ARCHAEOLOGY published by Archeopress based in Oxford and scientific director of the TOLOMEO LAB. ARCHAEOLOGY_GEOPHYSICS_GEOMATICS_GEOGRAPHY.
He is Director/Co-Director of several Excavations, Research projects in Italy and three Archaeological Missions Abroad.
He is President of the Centre for Study of Adriatic Archaeology in Ravenna (https://www.arcadria.eu/) and was President of the Archaeological Park of Ancient Suasa (2014-2023).
He is Member of the Butrint Research Group within the Butrint Management Foundation that manages the Archaeological Park of the UNESCO site of Butrint in Albania (https://bmf.al/home), Member of the Italian University Council for Ancient Topography (http://www.topografiaantica.it/) and former Member of the Italian University Council for Classical Archaeology. He is also Member of the Research Quality and Third Mission Monitoring Group of the Department of History and Culture.
MAIN RESEARCH FIELDS
PREVENTIVE ARCHAEOLOGY AND PRESERVATION OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE: Development of non-invasive survey methodologies and topographic documentation for mapping and preservation of the archaeological heritage also in the framework of international collaborations (British School at Rome; Albanian Archaeological Institute, Krka National Park in Croatia).
URBAN LANDSCAPE ARCHAEOLOGY: Study of the genesis and development of ancient urban centres in relationship with the surrounding landscape, both still inhabited (Urban Archaeology in Ascoli Piceno, Ancona, Rimini) and abandoned (Archaeological Parks of Pompeii, Paestum, Agrigento, Butrint, Burnum, Bakchias, Suasa), also for purposes of valorisation and management.
LANDSCAPES ARCHAEOLOGY: Study of the ancient landscapes and the relationship between settlement and geography in the Adriatic and Ionian Area, also with the aim of producing Maps of Archaeological Potential (Archaeological Map of Agrigento, Picenum, Southern Albania).

Director of the Italian Archaeological Mission in the Roman Castrum of Burnum (Croatia) and in the ancient Town of Bakchias (Egypt), supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAECI) and in agreement with Croatian and Egyptian Institutions.
Director of the Archaeological excavations at the Roman Town of Suasa, at the roman Town of Falerio and at the Hellenistic Sanctuary of Monte Rinaldo in the Marche region, in agreement with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage (MiBACT).
Scientific Director of the Research Projects of the University of Bologna in the archaeological parks of Pompeii (Casa di Obellio Firmo), Agrigento (Hellenistic-Roman Houses), Paestum (Walls), and Stabia.
Scientific Director of the Urban Archaeology projects of Bologna University in the Adriatic Area (Ascoli Piceno, Ancona).
Scientific Co-Director of the Project for the creation of Archaeological Maps of Northern Epirus (southern Albania) in agreement with the Albanian Archaeological Institute
Scientific Director, with Federica Boschi and Stephen Kay, of the Research Agreement for Adriatic Archaeology between the University of Bologna and the British School at Rome.
SCIENTIFIC DIRECTION OF RECENT PROJECTS WITHIN COMPETITIVE TENDERS
Project manager for the University of Bologna of the Pompeii Knowledge Plan (2015), supported by European funds within the framework of a competitive tender, which involved the coordination of 50 researchers from archaeology, architecture, and engineering departments of various Italian universities and 10 consultants linked to university spin-offs and other leading companies.
Selected as a member of the University of Bologna team involved in the CHANGES project within Spoke 6 (History, Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage 2023-2025) coordinated by the University of Catania (competitive project financed with PNRR European funds).
Project Manager and Leader of Research Unit in PRIN 2022, European-funded research projects of national interest (PNRR): FortNet. Fortification and population network between Iron Age and the Medieval period; MAPS 2022 - Methods and processes for the Analysis of Pluristratified Sites.
EXHIBITION AND MUSEUM DESIGN
Design and layout of the Museum of the Roman City of Suasa, at Palazzo Compiani Della Rovere (2017), of the Antiquarium of S. Lorenzo in Campo (2007) and of the of Santa Maria in Portuno in Corinaldo (2005).
Design and layout of the exhibition on 'Pesaro. Archaeology in town and country' and 'Phoinike. The city and its territory' in S. Giovanni in Monte in Bologna (2011).
Design and layout of the educational itinerary of the Domus dei Coiedii in the Suasa Archaeological Park and the archaeological museums of Castelleone di Suasa and the territory of S. Lorenzo in Campo (2000).
TEACHING AND TUTORING ACTIVITIES
At the University of Bologna and at the Ravenna Campus he teaches courses in Landscape Archaeology, Archaeology of the Ancient City; Archaeology of the Roman City, Preventive Archaeology; Technologies for Archaeology, Archaeological Research Methodologies.
Tutor for 5 PhD research projects and various research grants, tutor of about 80 degree and postgraduate theses. Cotutor, discussant and reviewer for the PhD of the university of Messina, Salerno, Padova, Catania, Pisa.
SUMMER SCHOOL
He organised of the University of Bologna Summer School about Non-invasive methodologies and diagnostics for archaeology' (2007-2009) and has been professor of Topography in the Erasmus IP Summer School Program 'Preventive Archaeology. Evaluating sites and landscapes' (2014).
