Research: Risk Assessment from Multiple Hazards in Underground System

Emin Alakbarli is a PhD student of the XXXVII cycle, specializing in the Infrastructures, Transport Systems, and Geomatics curriculum within the PhD program in Infrastructures and Transport at Sapienza University of Rome. His dissertation focuses on the “Risk Assessment from Multiple Hazards in Underground System”.

In 2017, he graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University, with a thesis titled “Hydraulic Fracturing of Rocks”. In 2021, he obtained a Master's degree in Transport Systems Engineering, defending a thesis on “Risk Analysis in Tunnels and Infrastructure from Multiple Hazards” at Sapienza University of Rome, under the supervision of Professor Massimo Guarascio.

Since 2021, Emin has collaborated with ANAS in Rome as a Doctoral Researcher, focusing on risk engineering applications and tunnel safety assessments. He is winner of the scholarship for Teaching Assistant at Sapienza University for the “Safety and Risk Analysis” course (SSD:ING-IND/28) with Professor Guarascio, where he co-supervises students' master’s theses and individual projects, oversees programming tasks and conducts exams.

His recent professional experiences include his role as Cooperation Associate at CERN’s HSE-OHS division in Geneva, Switzerland (March 2023 - October 2024), where he engaged in fire safety engineering, evacuation analysis, multi-hazard risk management, and quantitative risk-based design, under the guidance of supervisors Marco Andreini and Saverio La Mendola. He is also a Doctoral Researcher at Lund University, Sweden (September 2023 - October 2024), working on performance-based evacuation design with Professor Enrico Ronchi.

Throughout his academic years, he has gained international experience through the Erasmus+ traineeship scholarship in the Netherlands (January-April 2021). He also participated in the joint project “Training Course for Safety Managers in Tunnel” (2020-2021), organized by Autostrade per l’Italia and Sapienza University.

Throughout his professional development, he completed the “Tunnel Fire Dynamics” course at Lund University (October 2023 - January 2024), led by Professor Haukur Ingason, gaining expertise in advanced fire dynamics for tunnel environments. In July 2023, he organized and presented the two-day technical training sessions on “Safety Level Measure and Risk Assessment in Multi-Hazard Scenarios within Underground Systems” at CERN, where he led discussions on safety strategies and risk assessment techniques for complex underground systems.

He is fluent in Azerbaijani (native), Turkish (C2), English (C1), Russian (B2), and Italian (B2). His technical competencies span tools such as Matlab, Python, Pyrosim, Pathfinder, FDS, EVAC, HPC systems, Autodesk Inventor, ArcGIS Pro, QGIS and various operating systems.
