Research: An Investigation into Shakespeare's Original Pronunciation (OP) in the 21st century: Systematising debates and data, and exploring OP at the Globe

Emiliana Russo is a PhD student in ”Studies in English Literatures, Cultures, Language and Translation” at Sapienza University in Rome. She holds a B.A. in English and German languages and literatures from the University of Naples L’Orientale, and an M.A. in translation, linguistic and literary studies from Sapienza University, with a thesis entitled "La pronuncia shakespeariana tra testo e teatralità”. While studying for her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, Emiliana took courses at Universität Bayreuth in Germany (DAAD), and spent nine months as an Erasmus grantee at the University of Warwick in England. In 2016, she was granted a research scholarship with the Globe Theatre, funded by IASEMS (Italian Association of Shakespearean and Early Modern Studies), and between 2016 and 2017 she worked as a MIUR language assistant at George Heriot's school in Edinburgh in Scotland. In 2018, she was a recipient of the FLTA scholarship (Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program) and between September 2019 and May 2020, she was a Senior Language Fellow at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania in the US. In 2023 she was a recipient of the Rector's award at the University of Silesia (Wyróżnienie Rektora). She is currently working on Shakespeare’s Original Pronunciation (OP), particularly on its phonological characteristics and theatrical implications and effects. Apart from Shakespeare’s reconstructed pronunciation and theatre, her current research interests include literary linguistics and Italian as a second and non-native language.
