I am Associate Professor of Christian and Medieval Archaeology since 2007 and I am qualified as Full Professor (10/A1 – ARCHAEOLOGY) since 2014 (qualified again as Full Professor in 2018).
My main field of research is about the Christian cemeteries of Rome and Southern Italy between 3th and 7th century, with topographical studies and archaeological excavations in Christian cemeteries - particularly in Christian catacombs. In some catacombs in Rome suburb I conducted excavations and published analysis of related finds, and I analyzed topographically other contexts. I studied especially tombs typology in the Roman subterranean cemeteries of Rome in the suburb area defined by the via Ostiense, via Ardeatina and via Appia. I carried out also other archaeological excavations, as in the Christian “circus-shaped” basilica on via Ardeatina in Rome, as also in the “Ponte della Lama” cemetery and catacombs and in S. Pietro basilica in Canosa di Puglia, with consequent publications of detailed analysis of the monuments and of the inscriptions.
Indeed, another relevant field in my research activities is Epigraphy. I published studies and editions of inscriptions from Rome, Ostia, Portus Romae, as well as from provincia Apulia et Calabria.
Of course, as professor in University of Bari in Apulia, I focused my search acvities also in Apulia: so, the cities of provincia Apulia et Calabria became in last decade another object of my attention, especially about their process of transformation in Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages. After the study of Canusium, the official seat of Roman governor of Apulia et Calabria, I focused on the city of Bari, heir of the role of Canusium as capital of the region from the Early Middle Age: Bari is the official capital of the Byzantine governor, whose seat in the city was the praitorion, where now is the St. Nicholas’ basilica established at the end of 11th century. Since 2017 I lead a systematic series of archaeological surveys and excavations in this area: after my edition of a books about this search; other studies about structures and finds at the moment are published and in progress.
In this frame, I am involved with a responsibility role in the project of the Corpus Architecturae Religiosae Europaeae (CARE) about churches and Christian and Early Middle Ages funerary settlements in the central area of Apulia (territories of Bari and Taranto).

Since the beginning of my academic career I published around 100 papers: 3 authored books, 20 book chapters, 27 papers in periodicals, 18 papers in national conferences, 10 papers in international conferences, 17 dictionaries and encyclopedias entries. I have participated as a speaker in more than 50 national and international seminars and conferences.
