ASN nel 2021 a Professore Ordinario per BIO10 (Biochimica)

Laureata (con lode) presso l'Università La Sapienza di Roma, mi sono poi trasferita all'Università del Galles, College of Cardiff, Galles (UK) per svolgere ricerche nell' ambito del mio dottorato di ricerca in Biochimica, conseguito nel 1991. Dopo brevi soggiorni di ricerca presso l'Università di Cardiff (UK), il Biozentrum (Basilea, CH) e IPK (Gatersleben, DE) Ho assunto un incarico di ricerca e insegnamento (Ricercatore/Professore assistente) presso l'Università di Roma La Sapienza dove ho continuato la mia carriera scientifica.
Da ricercatore, ho ampliato le mie competenze anche alla biologia molecolare e alla microbiologia, lavorando sulla regolazione trascrizionale e sulla biochimica del sistema Gad, il principale sistema di resistenza agli acidi dell'Escherichia coli (commensale e patogeno) e di altri batteri enterici. Sono anche esperto di enzimi PLP-dipendenti, in particolare glutammato decarbossilasi (GAD) e GABA-transaminasi (GABA-T).

Sono uno dei massimi esperti nel campo delle risposte batteriche allo stress acido e ho scritto recensioni anche molto di recente su invito su riviste prestigiose e libri.
Fino al 16 ottobre 2023 sono stato Chiar e Grant Holder Scientific Representative della COST Action CA18113 "EuroMicropH" (https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA18113; https://euromicroph.eu/), una rete di scienziati provenienti da 33 paesi riuniti attorno al argomento "Understanding and exploiting the impacts of low pH on micro-organisms". L'Azione contava 240 membri.

Ad oggi ho formato nella ricerca oltre 30 studenti Master e supervisionato/co-supervisionato 11 studenti di dottorato.

Linee di ricerca e Progetti:
- Microbiologia-Biologia Molecolare: lavoro sulla regolazione trascrizionale e sulla biochimica dei sistemi glutammato e glutammina-dipendenti, i principali sistemi di resistenza agli acidi (AR) nell'Escherichia coli (commensale e patogeno) e in molti altri batteri enterici. Sono attualmente allo studio diverse interconnessioni tra diversi sistemi AR e altri processi fisiologici e legati allo stress (come la persistenza) in E. coli e altri batteri enterici.
In anni più recenti ha anche intrapreso studi su nuovi antimicrobici e sul microbioma nella salute e nelle malattie umane
- Biochimica: Esperto di enzimi PLP-dipendenti, in particolare glutammato decarbossilasi (GAD) e GABA-transaminasi (GABA-T) di origine mammifera e batterica. Le proprietà strutturali e il meccanismo catalitico del GAD sono studiati tramite mutagenesi sito-diretta, espressione e purificazione di varianti ricombinanti, studi cinetici e spettroscopici in combinazione con studi strutturali (questi ultimi in collaborazione).
- Biotecnologia: sfruttamento e ingegneria del GAD per applicazioni biotecnologiche, compresa la sintesi di molecole bioattive. Inoltre sta anche studiando la risposta allo stress acido in E. coli e altre specie batteriche per applicazioni nel settore alimentare e biotecnologico (Azione COST CA18113) nonché il metabolismo batterico per scopi di biorisanamento.
- Sono PI di un PRIN 2022 PNRR su "Investigation on the nanoparticles-driven controlled delivery of antimicrobial peptides to treat dermatological infections", una linea di ricerca sviluppata in collaborazione con il CNR e dermatologi del mio stesso Dipartimento.
- Ho partecipato attivamente al progetto NANO-LC finanziato dalla NATO SPP (2021-2023).
- Sono Work Package Leader di un progetto Erasmus KA2 (Partenariato per la Cooperazione) su eOSCE per l'innovazione digitale nella formazione medica (2022-2024).
