Research: English Translations of the Purāṇas (from 1840) and their Influence on the Yogic Imaginary in the Western European Literature of the 19th Century.

Dagmara Wasilewska is a PhD student in culture and religion studies at The University of Silesia in Katowice and in English Literatures, Language and Translation (curriculum in literary and cultural studies) at the University of Rome La Sapienza. She graduated in Indian Studies (Oriental philology) from Jagiellonian University in Krakow in 2010. While working as a lecturer at the University of Silesia in Katowice (in the years 2013-2021), where she used to teach Indian languages and translation, she has been conducting a research into one of the medieval religious traditions of India which ultimately led to her interest in yoga. Since 2015 she has been teaching the history of yoga as well as the history of ancient Indian medical literature at the Katowice Business University. Currently, Ms. Wasilewska is working on her PhD thesis under the supervision of prof. Anna Gomóła and prof. Emilia Di Rocco. Her dissertation centres around the early history of Yoga in the West, with a particular emphasis on the influence of the Purāṇic traditions on shaping the image of yoga and yogi.
