Carlo Martinez is Professor of American Literature at Sapienza, University of Rome, Italy. He got his doctorate in American Studies from University of Roma III (1998) and a Fulbrighter scholarship as PhD student at State University of New York at Buffalo, USA (1995/96). From 2002 to 2004 he taught at the University “G. d’Annunzio”, Chieti-Pescara, where he was Rector’s delegate to international relations and development cooperation (2014-2018), coordinator of the doctoral program in “Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in Contact” (2017-2019), Head of the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Modern Cultures (November 2018 through March 2024), and a member of the Academic Senate (November 2018 through March 2024). As coordinator of the doctoral program he obtained a PON scholarship (2017) and, together with the colleague prof. Michele Sisto, he successfully applied for a fixed term position of researcher in American literature funded by the EU (PON-AIM 2019-2021). He was AISNA Secretary (2010-2013); a member of the IASA (International American Studies Association) executive council (2015-2018). He was a member of ASN evaluating committee (2019-2021). His research interests focus mostly on 19th century American literature, on tourism and literature, and on journalism and literature in antebellum America. He is member of the editorial board of Ácoma. Rivista internazionale di studi nordamericani, He is wrote a book on Henry James’ Prefaces and one on Edgar Allan Poe. He also translated and edited a collection of Poe’s tales. His articles and essays have appeared in a number of Italian, American and English journals and books, among which The Edgar Allan Poe Review, Arizona Quarterly, Review of International American Studies, and RSAJournal. His latest publication is publication is an translation with introduction and notes of “Across the Abruzzi with Mattied and Harriet” of Edmund Wilson ("Attraverso gli Abruzzi con Mattie e Harriet", Ianieri editore, Pescara, 2024).
