CURRICULUM VITAE CRISTINA LEMORINI
RESEARCH INTERESTS
Investigation of the hominins cognition and behavior by means of experimental archaeology, technological analysis and functional analysis of archaeological artifacts. Investigation of specialization in Prehistory and History. Application of innovative techniques to use-wear and residues analyses of archaeological stone, ceramic, osseous and metal artefacts.

PRESENT ACADEMIC POSITION
From March 2008 she is Associate Professor at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. She teaches Experimental Archaeology and Use-Wear analysis of archaeological artifacts.
She has organized, and nowadays supervises, the Laboratory of Techno-Functional Analysis of Archaeological Artifacts (LTFAPA), Dep. of Sciences of Antiquity of Rome “La Sapienza”. She is the winner for years 2010, 2011, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2023 of a grant from Sapienza University devoted to the improvement of the laboratory equipment.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY
She collaborates on various national and international projects on typological, technological and functional analysis of lithic industry, polished stones, macro-lithic artefacts, hard animal material artifacts, clay artifacts from both Plio-Pleistocene and Holocene archaeological sites and ethnographic contexts.
2007-2010 - She was the director of the project: “Developing a FTIR (Fourier Transfer InfraRed) spectra collection for interpreting residues of the prehistoric activities.” ICRG 64 ICRG 91, supported by The Wenner-Gren Foundation (NY).

Since 2009 she coordinates a research project of traces analysis of Lower Paleolithic contexts of Israel supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE Project) by Sapienza University (International Scientific Agreements).

Since 2009 she is part of the team of scholars involved in the study of various Oldowan sites from Kanjera Peninsula (Kenya); she is team leader of the use-wear analysis. She is leader of the group in charge of the use-wear, residues and experimental analyses of the chipped stone
tools and microlithic tools found in these sites.

In 2012 she obtained a Grant FARI (La Sapienza University Grant) to test the feasibility of a project of traces analysis of prehistoric stone objects and stone buildings by the application of digital close-range photogrammetry.

In 2014, 2015 and 2017 she obtained the founding for projects Medium Equipment of Sapienza University focused on the acquisition of a SEM-EDX and a Digital Microscope.

In 2023, she obtained PNRR funding for the renovation of outdated equipment at Sapienza University. This included the upgrade of the Confocal Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIS) microscope in the LTFAPA laboratory.

Also in 2023, she secured funding as Co-PI for the acquisition of equipment dedicated to highresolution imaging techniques for the chemical and morphological analysis of solid microparticles in the STEM and ALPH disciplines, as part of the "Large Equipment" initiative of Sapienza University.

In 2024, as Principal Investigator of a Sapienza Medium Research Project, she obtained funding for the experimental study of fluorescence fingerprints aimed at identifying microresidues related to past activities on archaeological artifacts.

In 2012 she was co-organizer of the International Workshop “An integration of use-wear and residues analysis for the identification of the function of archaeological stone tools”, held in Rome (5-7 of March) and supported by the Conference and Workshop Grants Program of Wenner-Gren Foundation (NY).

In 2013 she was co-organizer of the International Workshop “The origin of recycling: a Paleolithic perspective”, held in Tel Aviv (7-10 of October) and supported by the Conference and Workshop Grants Program of Wenner-Gren Foundation (NY).

2013-2018 she was part of the team of scholars involved in the study of the Neolithic phases of Ҫatalhöyük (Ҫatalhöyük Research Project, director I.Hodder); she is team leader of the use-wear analysis of the chipped stone tools.

Since 2017 she is part of the team of scholars involved in the study of the Lower Paleolithic site of Notarchirico, Venosa (excavation and scientific project directed by Marie-Hélène Moncel); she is team leader of the use-wear analysis of the chipped stone tools.

Since 2022 she is part of the team engaged in the ERC Advanced Granted Project LATEEUROPE PI M.H. Moncel, Museum Paris.

Since 2022 she is Co-PI of the project WP6 Spoke 5 SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR SUSTAINABLE DIAGNOSTICS OF CULTURAL HERITAGE Sapienza University Funds PNRR.
She is part of numerous research projects regarding the evolution of technology in Lower Paleolithic and the developing of technology, specialization as cultural traits in Prehistory and History.

She is part of the scientific committee of Origini, Bullettino di Paletnologia Italiana, Gorthiana, Archeologie Sperimentali.

Since 2023, she has been President of the international association AWRANA – Association of Archaeological Wear and Residue Analysts.

ACADEMIC FORMATION
19th April 1988: she obtained the bachelor’s degree in Humanity Sciences at the University of Rome "La Sapienza". The degree’s thesis concerned the interpretative potential of use-wear analysis applied to Middle Palaeolithic flint industries.

21st October 1997: she received the title of PhD of Archaeology at Leiden University (Holland).The research has been published in BAR International Series: C.Lemorini (2000), Reconnaître des tactiques d’exploitation du milieu au Paléolithique moyen. La contribution de l’analyse fonctionnelle. Etude fonctionnellle des industries lithiques de Grotta Breuil (Latium, Italie) et de La Combette (Bonnieux, Vaucluse, France), BAR (I.S.) 858.

1999-2001: she attended to a TMR Project CEE as a Post-Doc scholar to apply use-wear analysis to a Pre-pottery Neolithic site of Dead See (Israel), to Lower and Middle Paleolithic site and to Copper age sites of Portugal.

PUBLISHED PAPERS
She is the author of one monograph, co-editing of four publications and author of 223 papers published.
