This research aims to examine the philosophical-linguistic foundations of the theoretical apparatuses used in the literature on animal communication. In particular, the research will focus on the notion of 'meaning' (around which the first systematic convergence between philosophical reflection and ethological research occurred) analysing it in its multimodal nature. An attempt will be made in order to assess the explanatory value of this notion with regard to the cognitive and communicative continuities that other species share with our own, and its possible implications for the understanding of human language origins.
Research interests: animal communication; animal cognition; non-human reference; multimodality
