Research: Remembering the Korean Historical Trauma Through Korean Christian Art: An Analysis of Transmission of Traumatic Memory in Korean Christian Paintings from the Sprouting (1910-1953) to the Formative Period (1960-1970) (Provisional)

Curriculum East Asia

ABSTRACT The project investigates the representations of traumatic memory, stemming from the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War, in 20th-century Korean Christian art. Situated at the intersection of Cultural Memory Studies and Korean Art History, the work is theoretically based on the concept of collective and cultural memory and employs Panofsky's model of iconographical analysis as a methodological tool for examining the artworks. The objectives are: to provide a deeper historical understanding of the emotional impact of Japanese colonialism and the Korean War on the population and, simultaneously, to explore and highlight the artistic significance of the works in question.

RESEARCH INTERESTS Korean Art; Korean Christian Art; Memory Studies.
