CINZIA MARCHESE
Full Professor of Laboratory Medicine (SSD MED/46) at the School of Medicine of La Sapienza University of Rome, since 2005. She was born in Catania where she obtained the degree in Biology, awarded cum laude, in 1982, Professional Qualification and registration to National Order of Biologists, in 1985, the Specialty in General Pathology, awarded cum laude, in 1987 and PhD in Immuno-pharmacology in 1992.

Main research lines:
Over the last 20 years, the main interests of Prof. Marchese have been focused on the role of growth factors and epithelial cells and more recently on their role in regenerative medicine. She focused her attention on understanding the intracellular signaling pathways triggered by several surface activation/internalization of receptors and their involvement in the regulation of epithelial cells proliferation and differentiation. She first demonstrated the role of KGF/KGFR in reepithelializing human skin and the modulation of the expression of different isoforms of the KGFR, the FGFR2-IIIb and FGFR2-IIIc. She also has been interested in analyzing the molecular events involved in upregulation of KGFR isoforms in human cancer. She devoted most of her studies to translational research since she was at the Harvard Medical School in Boston in which she learned to use human epidermal stem cell cultures in the treatment of severe burn wounds. Then she spent several periods of times at the National Institute of Health of Bethesda and later on at the Mount Sinai Cancer Centre of New York for a still going collaboration on the study of the role of growth factors and their receptors in the regulation of cellular proliferation and differentiation pathways. Following these studies she developed human mucosal stem cells cultures to reconstruct vaginal tissue in patients with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser Syndrome (MRKH) leading to recovery a normal life from the perspective of psychological and sexual habits. She also contributed to the study of adipose derived stem cells in the development of therapeutical strategies for rare diseases still without treatments such as Sclerodermic, Haley-Haley and Parry Romberg Syndrome. Her studies on epithelial tissue have been focused also on gastro-intestinal tract in the treatment of ulcerative colitis, Bowel disease and following surgical removal of tumours. She has been published in highly qualified international journals and presented her studies at many national and international scientific meetings being internationally recognised as a valuable scientist in the field of regenerative medicine, contributing with her work to the development of new treatment options for translational stem cells research.
