Research: Development and validation of protective materials for iron-based metal objects

Chiara Fratello earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry (class L-27) from the University of Rome, Sapienza in 2021 with a grade of 109/110, discussing a thesis entitled "Degradation of mortars and frescoes following a volcanic eruption: the case of Pompeii". Afterward, she pursued a Master's degree in Analytical Chemistry at the same university and completed her internship under the guidance of Professor Francesca Leonelli in the Department of Chemistry, Professor Laura Medeghini in the Department of Earth Sciences, and partially at the Rathgen research laboratory in Berlin (Rathgen Forschungslabor - Staatliche Museen zu Berlin) as part of the Erasmus+ Traineeship programme. In 2023, she graduated with 110/110 cum laude, discussing her thesis on "Characterization and evaluation of the algae extract NYMPHA as a new natural consolidant for restoration mortars."
Throughout her academic journey, she has been awarded three collaboration grants for students, which she carried out as a laboratory assistant for the General Chemistry course and as a front-office assistant for the G. Illuminati Library, at the Department of Chemistry.
Currently, she is enrolled in the PhD programme in Electrical, Materials and Nanotechnology Engineering and has been awarded a yearly research grant under the PRIN 2022M4KCKP (ECOforCONCRETE) programme. Her research activities are conducted at CNR-ISMN.
