Research:

ELVIS CHIA NGWAH is currently a doctoral researcher at the Faculty of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. I am attached to the Research Centre of Transport and Logistics where I am working to improve the accuracy and predictive capabilities of the Network-wide Assessment (NWA) model developed by the European Commission in January 2023, in which Member States are required to implement on all Trans-European Road Network (TEN-T) and all other roads constructed with EU funding. Specifically, my research is focused on improving one part of the model known as the NWA Proactive model. The model assesses road network based on the in-built characteristics of the road infrastructure. However, the model did not consider the effects of speeding related to the road infrastructure. Meanwhile, speed contributes to over 30% of all fatal crashes in Europe. As such, my research is focused on developing a Crash Modification Factor (CMF) for speed, to be integrated into the current NWA Proactive model. We previewed that this will improve the accuracy of the current model, producing results that correlate better with the historical crash data for the site concerned.
