Research:

ELVIS CHIA NGWAH is a PhD Candidate at the Faculty of Civil, Building and Environmental Engineering at the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. He is assigned to the Research Centre of Transport and Logistics, where he conducts research related to road safety assessment procedures. Specifically, in his doctoral research, he developed a crash modification factor for vehicle operating speed using the cross-sectional method and incorporated this CMF into the current European Network-wide Assessment (NWA) Proactive model in order to improve the predictive accuracy of the model. According to him, the main reason behind this research is because the current NWA proactive model does not take into account the safety effects of vehicle operating speed related to road infrastructure, meanwhile, speed contributes to over 30% of all road fatalities especially on two-lane undivided rural roads in Europe. The second part of his research investigated the performance of the NWA procedure on non-European roads specifically on typical Sub-Saharan African highways. The case study was the Douala-Yaoundé highway in Cameroon.
