Full Professor of Linguistics at University of Silesia in Katowice, (Poland) and at Częstochowa University of Technology (Poland); MA in English philology, University of Silesia in Katowice (1986); PhD in linguistics in 1993 (dissertation: Semantics and Pragmatics of Verba Dicendi in English); dr hab. (D. Litt; post-PhD degree) in humanities in 2007 (dissertation: Concessive Relation in Spoken English. A Study into Academic Spoken English); Full (State) Professor in Humanities (2015); the Sidney Holgate scholarship holder of Durham University (1988, 2003) and of COBUILD lexicographic and corpus linguistic team at the University of Birmingham (2004); director of the Institute of English (2008-2016); deputy director of the Institute of English (1998-2008);) head of the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies (2008-2019); head of the Postdiploma Study for English Translators (2002-2016); member of the board of Polish Association for the Study of English (1996-2000); secretary of ISAPL (International Society of Applied Psycholinguistics, 2014-2019); member of several international editorial boards; researcher in eight European projects in linguistics and language teaching; researcher in three National Research Committee projects in the field of lexicography; organizer and co-organizer of more than twenty domestic and international conferences; forensic linguistics court expert; translator; member of the Linguistics Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2015-2019); member of the Committee of Applied Linguistics at the Committee of Linguistics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2010-2015); member of the Linguistic Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Katowice (1994 -); member of the Polish Accreditation Commission (2016–2019); expert of the Polish Accreditation Commission (2014-2018); member of English philology assessment group at the University Accreditation Commission (2010-2012); member of the scientific council of The Professor Tadeusz Widła Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Forensic Science and Legislation at University of Silesia; supervisor of 13 doctoral dissertations, reviewer of 19 habilitation (D. Litt) dissertations and 18 doctoral dissertations; a speaker and a key speaker at over 100 conferences; his major research areas are semantics and pragmatics of modern English, academic discourse and specialized languages and (psycho)linguistic aspects of translation and interpreting, to which he keenly applies methods of corpus linguistics. His academic motto is well-reflected by the following quotation from Wolfgang Teubert (2010):

My view is that the world, our lives, the things we do or don’t do, and what happens to us, have no meaning at all, in as much as we do not appropriate them through interpretation. Our experiences only make sense when we reflect on them, or when we share them with others by talking about them, or when we weigh them against other people’s experiences as we find them in the media we consume. This is indeed what we do most of the time when we talk with each other: we assign meaning to what we do and what others do.
