Alice Balestrino is Assistant Professor (RTT) of Anglo-American literature at the Department of European, American, and Intercultural Studies of Sapienza, University of Rome. After earning a degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures from the University of Turin (2012), she obtained a PhD in Literatures in English, from Sapienza (2019). From 2019 to 2022, she was a Research Assistant and Program Coordinator for IFUSS (International Forum for US Studies) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she pursued a second PhD in Italian Studies, with the support of the Program of Jewish Culture and Society. In 2022, she returned to Italy as a Junior Assistant Professor (RTDA) at the University of Roma Tre. Her primary areas of interest include Transnational American Studies, Italian Theory and fiction, Post-9/11 Literature, Jewish-American literature, postmemorial narratives, Gertrude Stein, and Philip Roth. She is currently working on a research project titled "The Female Gene: Gertrude Stein and Margherita Sarfatti Generating Vulnerabilities and Reproducing Power," which explores the controversial ramifications of the modernist works of two pro-fascist female authors of Jewish-origins. She is a member of the editorial board of Ácoma - Rivista Internazionale di Studi Nordamericani and the recipient of international awards including the Siegel McDaniel Award from the Philip Roth Society. She is a member of AISNA, MLA, the Memory Studies Association, and the Philip Roth Society.

She has published essays in, among others, Ácoma, Philip Roth Studies, Altre Modernità, Status Quaestionis, RIAS (Review of International American Studies), and REDEN (Revista Española de Estudios Norteamericanos). She is the author of a book on the concept of vacancy as a reading strategy for Holocaust uchronias and autofictions written in the aftermath of 9/11 (Extra-Vacant Narratives. Reading Holocaust Fiction in the Post-9/11 Age, Sapienza Università Editrice, 2022).
