After earning a degree in Physics of Complex Systems from Sapienza University of Rome (1997), AV pursued advanced training in Bioinformatics at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata,” completing a post-graduate internship, a PhD (1999–2003), and a postdoctoral fellowship (2003–2007). In 2008, she joined the Biocomputing Unit at Sapienza University as a researcher, further consolidating her expertise in bioinformatics and computational biology. She became a senior researcher at the National Research Council (CNR) in 2016 and, in 2022, returned to Sapienza University as a tenure-track faculty member. She was appointed associate professor in 2025.



Her research focuses on structural biology, genomics, and machine learning, with applications to rare conformational diseases, cancer, infectious diseases, and complex genetic traits. Her main interests include the genomic and structural characterisation of variants, pharmacological chaperones, mechanisms of drug resistance, protein stability, and the genetic basis of comorbidities. Since 2010, she has also contributed to international bioinformatics training initiatives such as the Bioinformatics Training Network (BTN), GOBLET, and ELIXIR, serving as training coordinator for the Italian Node from 2014 to 2025. Through this work, she has developed expertise in data and software management, sharing, integration, and FAIR principles, and has expanded her research to encompass learning processes and curriculum development.
