Alessio Tamburrano received the Laurea degree cum laude, the Master’s degree in Electromagnetic Compatibility and Environmental Impact of Electromagnetic Fields, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, in 2003, 2005, and 2007, respectively.
He has held several academic positions at Sapienza, starting as Assistant Professor in 2006, becoming Associate Professor in 2018, and Full Professor of Electrical Engineering in 2022. He currently serves as Chair of the MSc Programme in Nanotechnology Engineering at Sapienza University. He is also a member of the Steering Committee of the Research Center on Nanotechnology applied to Engineering (CNIS), and a member of the Scientific Board of the Ph.D. programme in Electrical, Materials, Raw Materials and Nanotechnology Engineering.
He has long taught the course of Electrical Engineering for the BSc in Aerospace Engineering, the course of Electromagnetic Compatibility for the MSc in Electrical Engineering, and the lab courses Sensors and Materials for Electrical Engineering and Sensors and Electromagnetic-electrical Characterizations for both the MSc programmes in Nanotechnology Engineering and in Electrical Engineering at Sapienza.
His research interests lie at the intersection of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), sensor technologies, and nanotechnology. His work focuses on the study, modeling, and experimental characterization of advanced and nanostructured materials for electromagnetic applications, including shielding materials, radar-absorbing structures, transparent conductors, and multifunctional nanocomposites. Recent research includes the development of graphene-based piezoresistive paints, conductive inks, and porous nanocomposites with strain-sensing capabilities, for structural health monitoring and wearable devices. He is also active in modeling and simulating the transmission-line performance and signal integrity of nanointerconnects, such as single-wall and multiwall carbon nanotube bundles and graphene nanoribbons, targeting next-generation high-speed electronics.
Prof. Tamburrano has authored more than 120 articles in international journals and conference proceedings, coauthored 10 patents, and contributed two book chapters. A member of the IEEE EMC Society since 2002 and a Senior Member since 2017, he has played an active role in the IEEE EMC Society Technical Committee TC-11 Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials, serving as Secretary (2011–2013), Chair (2013–2017), and Past Chair (2018–2023). He served as project leader (2010–2014) of the Joint Project Team 80004-9 – Nanotechnologies – Vocabulary – Part 9: Electrotechnical Products and Systems under the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and contributed to the IEEE Working Group P2715 for the development of guidelines on the characterization of shielding effectiveness of planar materials (2016–2023).
