Alessandro Trifiletti was born in Rome (Italy) on October 4, 1959. In 1991 he joined Electronic Engineering Department of “La Sapienza” University in Rome as research assistant, where he was involved in research activities dealing with analogue, RF and microwave IC’s design. In 2001 he become assistant professor, in 2005 he got the position of associate professor, and in 2019 the position of full professor at the Engineering Faculty of the same University. Prof. Trifiletti has worked in the field of Microelectronics, both from the point of view of design methodologies and circuit topologies. In particular, he has given contributions in the following areas:
Statistical modeling of active III-V devices. On this topic he has proposed a novel statistical model (driven by measurements) able to describe a device set belonging to the same IC, by implementing a non-linear HEMT statistical model with distance-depending parameter correlation.
Circuit theory: active network stability analysis. He proposed novel stability theorems to check, within a CAD design flow, conditional stability property of active network, so making easier the achievements of system performance.
Robust circuit design methodologies. He has proposed design methodologies able to increase the yield of active circuits (both for GaAs and CMOS technologies) by implementing an active control loop driven by a real-time process parameter estimator.
Topologies for analogue building blocks. Several novel topologies have been proposed to implement basic building blocks, e.g.: amplifiers, comparators, phase detectors.
Side channel analysis and circuit level countermeasures. Recently a great interest raised around the security issues related to cryptographic algorithm implementation, due to the need to protect sensitive information from unauthorized accesses. In this field he has contributed providing results about the physical implementation of attack, so revealing weakness of fabricated components and by introducing logic styles robust with respect information leakage.
RF multifunctional IC’s design. A number of IC’s has been implemented in the area of datacom and telecom application, with special focus on PLL and CDR.
On these subjects, Prof. Trifiletti has (co-)authored about 280 publications, of which more than 130 published in international Journals, the others published in the proceedings of major international Conferences (a large part of these sponsored by the IEEE). His h-index is 24 (Scopus source). He is presently reviewer for some of the IEE and IEEE major journal, including: IEEE Transaction on Microwave Theory and Techniques, IEEE Transaction on Circuit and Systems (part I and II), IEE Proceedings on Circuits, Devices and Systems, IEE Electronic letters. He is also author of 2 international patents (extended also in the U.S.A.) concerning RF circuits, and of two Italian patents.
From an R&D perspective, Prof. Trifiletti expertise focuses on analogue and RF microelectronics, Radar and ESM systems, high-speed communication systems, security issues in cryptographic algorithms implementation, and embedded system design. During the period 1991-2023, his research Group has successfully used several GaAs, Si and SiGe processes for the integration of basic building blocks and multifunctional IC’s. During 32 years of activity with “La Sapienza” University, he has been involved in several joint research activities with other academic Institutions and Industries, both in Italy and abroad. In particular, he had the technical responsibility of consultant activities of DIE for Italtel, CSELT, Fujitsu FCSI, Amtec, Elettronica S.p.A., OTI-Corning, Gemplus, Marconi-Elmer and ST Microelectronics, Atmel, Ericsson Lab Italy, Oerlikon Contraves, Elettronica S.p.A., Elmacom, and presently has (or has had) the scientific responsibility for research and consultant advice contracts of DIET (Department of Information Engineering, Electronics, and Telecommunication) with Thales Alenia Space Italia, CNR ISIB, Selex Elsag, Fondazione Ugo Bordoni, Italian MISE (Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico).
Since 1994 he started working with a team of young researchers who were involved in such activities giving raise to fruitful co-operations. Research collaboration were established with DIEES Dept. of Catania University (Italy) and HRF Chair of Paderborn University in Germany. Other collaborations were established with Companies. In this framework he has been in charge of several research contracts dealing with microelectronic development, system analysis and definition.
