Alessandro Niero (1968) graduated in Foreign Languages and Literature at the University of Verona (1993), was awarded a Ph.D degree in Slavic Comparative Literatures at Milan University (1999), and was researcher of Russian literature at the University of Bologna (2000-2003: Forlì; 2004-2011: Bologna). Associate Professor of Russian Literature at the University of Bologna since 2011, he obtained the National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor in Slavistics (L-Lin 21, sector 10/M2) in 2014 and 2019.
His main fields of research are Russian literature of the XX century (in particular Joseph Brodsky), the “superfluous man” in Russian literature of the XIX century, poetry translation, and reception of Russian literature in Italy.
He is the author of a monograph on translating Zamjatin’s prose (UNA «INCOGNITA» DI ZAMJATIN: PROBLEMI DI TRADUZIONE, 2001), on Brodsky as a translator of Italian poetry (L’ARTE DEL POSSIBILE. IOSIF BRODSKIJ POETA-TRADUTTORE DI QUASIMODO, BASSANI, GOVONI, FORTINI, DE LIBERO, SABA, 2008) and on the translation of Russian poetry (TRADURRE POESIA RUSSA. ANALISI E AUTOANALISI, 2019). He is also a translator of Russian prose (E. Zamjatin, S. Kržižanovskij, G. Bruskin) and poetry (E. Rejn, I. Ermakova, S. Stratanovskij, A. Fet, D. Prigov, I. Cholin, G. Ivanov, B. Sluckij, B. Pasternak).
For his translations he was awarded “National Prize for Translation” (Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, Rome 2006), the “Lerici Pea Mosca Prize” (Moscow 2008) e the “Read Russia / Čitaj Rossiju Prize (Moscow 2012).
He is member of the editorial board of the journal «Europa Orientalis» and editor of «Russia Poetica», a section of the series Passigli Poesia.
